This course is for Christians or Christian ministers sensing a call to Chaplaincy; or even those who just want to become more effectively equipped to help hurting people. You will learn the basics of chaplaincy and acquire the necessary skills for effectively ministering in crisis situations: grief-and-loss, death & dying, suicide situations, and any crisis situation that tends to traumatize people.

CAPABILITY NOTE: It is important to self-assess your aptitudes and learning abilities for the reading/comprehension/retention level of this course (at least high school proficiency in English reading/writing skills). While the textbooks (below) and course content are NOT graduate school level, they are basic college-level (post high school) in quality. If you have any questions or concerns about your aptitudes necessary for this training, you are welcome to contact the course facilitator, Rodger.Niemeier@nacministers.org . It will be required to demonstrate comprehension of textbooks and course content and application of learned principles and techniques in order to complete this training and be qualified for chaplain licensing by the NACM.

PERSONAL READINESS: If you are taking this course in hopes of becoming licensed by the NACM as a chaplain: chaplaincy is a typically a demanding ministry, since you are usually engaging people when they are traumatized and suffering. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you have a realistic confidence about your own personal stamina for engaging with people in crisis - not everyone is suited for this. If you have emotional or psychological issues (clinical or otherwise) that are unresolved or are you are being treated for, you may want to seriously consider if ministering in chaplaincy situations is going to be in any way detrimental to your own spiritual-psychological-emotional health. If you are in therapy or counseling yourself, ask your service provider to assess your readiness for chaplaincy work; as well, please let us know, too, so we can give helpful guidance as well. Be sure, even if you believe the Lord's leading in this direction, you are also being wise in your own personal assessment of your well-being and readiness for this kind of challenging ministering. There may be personal matters of this nature you need help with for yourself before engaging in ministering to others: you must be well yourself if you're going to minister to others' wellness.

Two textbooks are required: Whit Woodard's Ministry of Presence; and, H Norman Wright's The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling: What to Do & Say When It Matters Most. You can purchase them from your preferred bookseller (i.e., Amazon.com, CBD (Christian Book Distributors), even Walmart has carried them, etc.). All other readings, videos, and exercises are contained in the 16 online sessions of the course.

This is a self-paced independent study online course: you can complete it at your own pace and timing (no completion date or deadline). A Certificate of Completion is available upon completion. The NACM requires successful completion of this course (or it's equivalent) for licensing with the NACM as a community or volunteer chaplain. [Note: if you are away from the course for a few months, the course will automatically suspend your account: but preserve your progress in the course. If you try to sign back into the course and it states your account is \"inactive\", simply send an email to the course facilitator to be given access again. Your course never goes away!]

TUITION: $59.95 (no refund 7 days after payment is processed; refunded amount will be less any processing fees).

A Certificate of Completion is available when you complete the course. It is not required to obtain. Completing this course does not automatically provide licensing. Licensing is determined on a individual basis, though course completion is required (license renewed annually).

Rev Rodger Niemeier has been in Christian ministry since 1974, just 3 years after his conversion to Christ at Kent State University. His bachelors degree is from Westminster College in New Wilmington PA, in Bible and English; his Masters of Divinity degree is from Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore KY, with emphases in pastoral ministry and cross-cultural missions (especially with Native Americans).

Rodger got his start in Christian ministry as an assistant pastor in 5 churches over 13 years. One of those churches was a street-ministry church in Dayton, Ohio, ministering to young people to overcome drug addiction through Christ; and 3 of those churches were new church plants. During this time he taught Bible and English in Dayton Christian Schools' Middle School, and participated in 4 short term mission trips to Nome, Alaska, ministering in a local church.

For 14 years Rodger was a church-planting pastor with the Christian & Missionary Alliance Native American District, planting an urban Native church in Seattle WA (1988 to 2002). In 2004, he founded Eagle Wings Native American Ministries (continuing today), also working for the Seattle Indian Health Board in their inpatient chemical dependency treatment center as a teacher of recovery groups, job readiness, and arranging sober housing (13 years).

In their Eagle Wings Ministries, Rodger and his wife Sarah (Native Hawaiian) have developed a recovery ministry to those (Native and non-Native) affected by domestic violence and past abuse, also addressing chemical dependency. They have both worked as workshop presenters and volunteer counselors for conferences conducted by RISING ABOVE (First Nations counseling agency for recovery from abuse, in Canada - RisingAbove.ca).

In 2010, Rodger joined the NACM (National Association of Christian Ministers) for ordination and licensing, and within a year became the organization's Vice President. In this fast-growing fellowship of Christian ministers from all over the US and overseas (over 36,000 members), Rodger oversees the organizational Elders, directs the Chaplaincy Program, teaches ministry skill courses, frequently posts ministry-related discussions and interacts with members as a minister-to-ministers.
